What is the DataGrout Microsoft OneDrive MCP Server?

The DataGrout Microsoft OneDrive MCP Server is a native Model Context Protocol server that exposes OneDrive as callable tools for AI agents. Agents can browse drives and folders, read file content and metadata, create folders, upload and replace files, create sharing links and manage permissions, search with KQL, restore context from versions and activity, and follow changes, all through one governed endpoint that enforces side-effect policy and runs Warden preflight on every call.

53 tools across files, sharing, versions and search

Reaches user drives, group drives and SharePoint site drives

Read and write allowed, scoped by your policy

53 Microsoft OneDrive tools, grouped by the work they do

Files are the point, but context is what makes an agent useful: who changed what, which version, who can see it. The tools are grouped that way below; the full inventory is in your signed-in workspace.

Drives, folders and items

Find your way around a drive by ID, by path or from the root.

  • Default drive details and root items
  • Children of a folder by item ID or item path
  • Item details, previews and thumbnails
  • Create folders by drive ID or user ID

File content and uploads

Read files in a chosen format and write them back, including large files.

  • Get file content in a specified format
  • Replace the content of an existing file
  • Create an upload session for a large file
  • Upload bytes to an upload session

Sharing and permissions

The riskiest part of a file store, made explicit and reviewable.

  • Create sharing links for an item
  • Create and update item permissions
  • Grant permission through an encoded sharing URL
  • Read items shared with the user and shared item details

Search and discovery

Find files across OneDrive and SharePoint without crawling folder by folder.

  • KQL search for files and folders
  • Search a drive root by text
  • Search a specific userโ€™s drive by text
  • Items the user is following

Versions, activity and changes

The history an agent needs to explain what happened to a document.

  • Version lists for a file, including another userโ€™s
  • Recent activity for a drive or an item
  • All-time analytics for an item
  • Delta queries for drive, root and site changes

Check-out, groups and sites

Controlled editing and the org structure around the files.

  • Check out, check in or discard a checkout
  • Move or rename an item
  • Group drives and Entra ID groups
  • SharePoint site, drives and site drive items

Connect Microsoft OneDrive in four steps

Everything happens in the DataGrout Hub โ€” no code, no per-agent configuration.

  1. 1

    Open your Hub Server

In DataGrout, open the Hub Server that will carry your integrations and click Add Integration.

  2. 2

    Find Microsoft OneDrive

Search for Microsoft OneDrive, then select the native MCP Server integration.

  3. 3

    Authorize

Connect through Microsoft OAuth using DataGrout credentials or your own application keys. mTLS is optional.

  4. 4

    Select tools and set policy

Expose the file and search tools the agent needs, then set side-effect and Warden policy.

Authentication

  • OAuth2

Choose DataGrout credentials or your own application keys, then click Connect to start the account connection.

  • mTLS (Mutual TLS)

Optional transport-level client identity, used alone or on top of the OAuth2 connection.

What agents get back

OneDrive items are returned with the identifiers an agent needs to act on them: drive ID, item ID, parent and path, plus the metadata that explains the item.

  • Item names, sizes, types and parent references
  • Sharing link and permission details
  • Version and activity records with timestamps
  • Receipt and execution summary per call

Governance on every Microsoft OneDrive call

The server ships with the same layered policy engine as every DataGrout integration. Security teams set the posture once; every agent inherits it.

Side-effect controls

Read and write are available. Side effects are governed by your policy, set per integration and inherited from the Hub Server above it.

PII and destructive access

PII access and destructive operations are separate policy switches, so you decide what an agent may reach. Worth scoping tightly when drives hold HR or customer files.

Warden preflight

Documents can carry hidden instructions. Warden screens every call in Off, Log only, Advisory or Enforce mode before it executes.

Policy inheritance

Integration policy inherits from the Hub Server and can only get stricter, Warden posture included. A child integration never weakens its parent.

Observability built in

Every execution can return a receipt, a pre-run credit estimate, a Cognitive Trust Certificate and a full execution summary โ€” so an agent's work on your Microsoft OneDrive data is always explainable.

What teams run on it

Four patterns that show up again and again once a Microsoft OneDrive connection is in place.

Document filing

An agent receives a file from an upstream process, creates the right folder structure and uploads it, with large files handled through upload sessions.

Find and summarize

Search with KQL, read the matching files in the format you need, and return a short summary with links to the sources.

Sharing reviews

List items shared with a user, check their permissions and links, and prepare a report of what is more open than it should be.

Change monitoring

Use delta queries and activity history to notice what changed in a drive or site, and notify the right team without polling every folder.

Microsoft OneDrive MCP Server FAQ

Through Microsoft OAuth2. You connect once in the DataGrout Hub using DataGrout credentials or your own application keys, and every agent on that Hub inherits the connection. mTLS can be layered on top.

Connect Microsoft OneDrive to your agents

Add the Microsoft OneDrive MCP Server to your DataGrout Hub and let agents find, file and share documents, with governance on every change.
