What is the DataGrout Notion MCP Server?

The DataGrout Notion MCP Server is a native Model Context Protocol server that exposes a Notion workspace as callable tools for AI agents. Agents can create and move pages, read a page as enhanced markdown, append and update blocks, work with databases and data sources, manage comments and views, and upload files โ€” through one governed endpoint that enforces side-effect policy and runs Warden preflight on every call.

51 tools with markdown read and write for pages

Databases, data sources and views fully exposed

Append-first writes that keep page structure

51 Notion tools, grouped by the work they do

Notionโ€™s data model is pages, blocks and databases โ€” and an agent has to respect all three. The tools are grouped below; the complete inventory is in your signed-in workspace.

Pages

Create, place and maintain pages โ€” including reading and writing them as markdown an agent can reason over.

  • Create pages under a parent page or a data source
  • Move a page to a new parent
  • Read a page as enhanced markdown, and write it back
  • Update properties, lock status and trash status

Databases and data sources

Structured Notion data, queryable with filters โ€” the closest thing Notion has to a table.

  • Create and update databases
  • Create and update data sources
  • Query pages by data source with filters and pagination
  • Data source templates, including template source pages

Blocks and content

The writing layer: append new blocks, change existing ones, wipe a page clean before a rewrite.

  • Append child blocks
  • Retrieve children of any block
  • Update block content in place
  • Erase all block children from a page

Comments

Discussion stays attached to the content it belongs to.

  • Create comments on a page or block
  • Retrieve comments by page or block ID
  • Retrieve and update a comment
  • Attribution for every comment exposed

Views and queries

Saved views are how teams read their data โ€” agents can run them rather than inventing a query.

  • Create views on a database
  • View queries and stored query results
  • Retrieve views by database
  • Update view definitions

Users, emojis and uploads

The supporting calls: identity, workspace assets and file handling.

  • List users and retrieve user details
  • Authenticated bot user lookup
  • Custom emojis across the workspace
  • File uploads and async task status

Connect Notion in four steps

Everything happens in the DataGrout Hub โ€” no code, no per-agent configuration.

  1. 1

    Open your Hub Server

In DataGrout, open the Hub Server that will carry your integrations and click Add Integration.

  2. 2

    Find Notion

Search for Notion, then select the native MCP Server integration.

  3. 3

    Authorize

Connect with Notion using DataGrout-managed credentials or your own integration credentials. mTLS is optional.

  4. 4

    Share pages with the integration

In Notion, grant the integration access to the pages and databases it should reach, then set tool and policy limits.

Authentication

  • OAuth2

Connect through Notionโ€™s OAuth flow using DataGrout-managed credentials or your own Notion integration credentials.

  • mTLS (Mutual TLS)

Optional transport-level client identity, used alone or alongside the OAuth2 connection.

What agents get back

Notion content is deeply nested. The tools return markdown for pages and children for blocks, so an agent can read and edit the same shape it wrote.

  • Page content as enhanced markdown
  • Block children in document order
  • Paginated data source queries with filters
  • Receipt and execution summary per call

Governance on every Notion call

The server ships with the same layered policy engine as every DataGrout integration. Security teams set the posture once; every agent inherits it.

Side-effect controls

Read and write are available. Side effects are governed by your policy, set per integration and inherited from the Hub Server above it.

PII and destructive access

PII access and destructive operations are separate policy switches, so you decide what an agent may reach โ€” useful when a workspace holds meeting notes with customer names.

Warden preflight

Notion pages are shared, editable content. Warden screens every call in Off, Log only, Advisory or Enforce mode before it executes.

Policy inheritance

Integration policy inherits from the Hub Server and can only get stricter, including Warden posture. A child never loosens the parent.

Observability built in

Every execution can return a receipt, a pre-run credit estimate, a Cognitive Trust Certificate and a full execution summary โ€” so an agent's work on your Notion data is always explainable.

What teams run on it

Four patterns that show up again and again once a Notion connection is in place.

Meeting notes that file themselves

A transcript becomes a Notion page with a summary, decisions and action items, created under the right project page and tagged consistently.

Database operations

An agent queries a content calendar by status and date, then creates or updates entries in the data source instead of editing them by hand.

Docs synced from source

Product specs in Notion are updated from the systems that actually changed, with page markdown written back rather than a stack of appended blocks.

Review loop handling

Comments on a draft are read, grouped into themes, applied to the page, and answered in thread โ€” with the agent never leaving the document.

Notion MCP Server FAQ

Through Notionโ€™s OAuth2 flow. In Notion you choose which pages and databases the integration can reach, and every agent on that DataGrout Hub inherits the same scoped connection. mTLS is available as an additional control.

Connect Notion to your agents

Add the Notion MCP Server to your DataGrout Hub and let agents write, file and maintain the workspace โ€” with the same governance as every other system you connect.
