What is the DataGrout ServiceNow MCP Server?

The DataGrout ServiceNow MCP Server is a native Model Context Protocol server that exposes ServiceNow ITSM as callable tools for AI agents. Agents can open and update incidents, problems and change requests, raise requests and request items from the service catalog, publish and search knowledge articles, maintain CMDB configuration items, services and service offerings, and look up tasks, SLAs, users and groups. Most record types can be queried by dozens of fields, such as state, priority, assignment group, configuration item or date, all through one governed endpoint that enforces side-effect policy and runs Warden preflight on every call.

477 tools across the ITSM record model

OAuth2 connection to your ServiceNow instance

Read and write allowed, scoped by your policy

477 ServiceNow tools, grouped by the work they do

ServiceNow is a set of connected workflows on one task table. The groups below follow that shape; the full inventory is in your signed-in workspace.

Incidents

Report, triage and look up what is broken.

  • Create an incident with caller, category, impact, urgency and configuration item
  • Update assignment, state, severity and service on an existing incident
  • Find incidents by state, priority, assignment group, caller or date
  • Get incident details by number, sys_id or task effective number

Problems and problem tasks

Find the root cause behind repeat incidents.

  • Create a problem with known error status, workaround and cause notes
  • Create and update problem tasks, including cause code and proposed fix
  • Find problems by state, resolution code, related incident count or fix date
  • Get problem and problem task details by number or sys_id

Change management

Plan, approve and review changes.

  • Create a change request with risk, impact, implementation, test and backout plans
  • Create and update change tasks with planned start and end dates
  • Find changes by phase, approval, type, CAB date or close code
  • Read and update approval records tied to a change

Requests and service catalog

What people ask for, and what can be asked.

  • Create requests, request items and catalog tasks
  • Create and update catalog items with price, delivery time and visibility
  • Find request items by catalog item, stage, requested for or approval
  • Get request and request item details by number or sys_id

Knowledge

Write the answer once, find it again later.

  • Create a knowledge article with body, knowledge base and category
  • Update article body, topic and commenting or suggesting settings
  • Find articles by workflow state, author, rating or view count
  • List knowledge bases and update their settings

CMDB, services, tasks and users

The records every ticket points at.

  • Create and update configuration items with ownership and support group
  • Create services and service offerings with classification and criticality
  • Query tasks across record types, and read Task SLA records
  • Create and update users and groups, and look them up by name or sys_id

Connect ServiceNow in four steps

Everything happens in the DataGrout Hub โ€” no code, no per-agent configuration.

  1. 1

    Open your Hub Server

In DataGrout, open the Hub Server that will carry your integrations and click Add Integration.

  2. 2

    Find ServiceNow

Search for ServiceNow, then select the native MCP Server integration.

  3. 3

    Connect your instance

In Credentials, choose OAuth2, pick your own application keys or DataGrout credentials, enter your instance host (for example dev12345.service-now.com, without https://) and click Connect.

  4. 4

    Select tools and set policy

Expose the incident, change and catalog tools the agent needs, try them in the Sandbox, then set side-effect and Warden policy.

Authentication

  • OAuth2

Clicking Connect starts the account connection process immediately. You can use your own application keys or DataGrout credentials.

  • Instance host

A required field that identifies your ServiceNow instance, entered without https://. It is saved with the connection so every agent on the Hub reaches the same instance.

  • Mutual TLS and Sandbox

Enable mTLS alongside OAuth2 when your instance requires certificate-based transport. The Sandbox runs any tool by name with its query variables, and returns a credit-cost estimate instead of executing when estimate_only is true.

What agents get back

ServiceNow responses carry the numbers and sys_ids an agent needs to chain the next call, plus the fields that describe the record it touched.

  • Record numbers and sys_ids for incidents, problems, changes and requests
  • State, priority, impact, urgency and assignment details
  • Configuration item, service and service offering links
  • Receipt and execution summary per call

Governance on every ServiceNow call

The server ships with the same layered policy engine as every DataGrout integration. Security teams set the posture once; every agent inherits it.

Side-effect controls

Read and write are available. Side effects are governed by your policy, set per integration and inherited from the Hub Server above it.

Policy and interaction controls

Policy Controls carry a Warden mode dropdown (Off, Log only, Advisory, Enforce) and a minimum verdict dropdown. The integration also has its own Interaction section, and overriding the parent policy or parent interaction settings is disabled by default.

Warden preflight

Tickets and knowledge articles are written by many people. Warden screens every call in Off, Log only, Advisory or Enforce mode before it executes.

Policy inheritance

The child can only tighten the parent. Parent permissions stay visible while the override is active, and a child integration never weakens its parent server.

Observability built in

Every execution can return a receipt, a pre-run credit estimate, a Cognitive Trust Certificate and a full execution summary โ€” so an agent's work on your ServiceNow data is always explainable.

What teams run on it

Four patterns that show up again and again once a ServiceNow connection is in place.

Incident triage

An agent reads new incidents, checks the configuration item and recent related tickets, then updates category, assignment group and urgency.

Change preparation

Draft the change request with its implementation, test and backout plans, create the change tasks, and report what still needs approval.

Knowledge upkeep

Find articles stuck in review or past their valid-to date, and draft updates from the incidents that keep citing them.

Service reviews

Compare services, offerings and configuration items with the incidents and problems raised against them, and summarise where reliability is slipping.

ServiceNow MCP Server FAQ

Through OAuth2 in the Credentials section. You choose your own application keys or DataGrout credentials, enter your instance host without https://, and click Connect. Every agent on that Hub inherits the connection.

Connect ServiceNow to your agents

Add the ServiceNow MCP Server to your DataGrout Hub and let agents work your ITSM queues, with governance on every record they touch.
